Your rashi — why the Moon sign, not the Sun sign, is your sign in Vedic astrology

In India, when someone asks your rashi, they mean your Moon sign — the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, measured in the sidereal zodiac. It is often different from the Sun sign you read in magazines, and it is the sign used for Sade Sati, transits, daily rashifal and matching.

Moon sign vs Sun sign

Western astrology mostly talks about the Sun sign, using the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, currently about 24° behind, and puts the Moon first because it represents the mind and emotional life. That is why many people find their Vedic rashi is one sign earlier than their Western sign — or completely different, since the Moon moves fast.

The 12 rashis

Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). Each is ruled by a planet whose nature colours how you feel and react.

Rashi by name vs rashi by birth

A rashi taken from the first letter of your name is a naming tradition, not your birth rashi. Your actual rashi is set by where the Moon was when you were born, and only that one is used for Sade Sati, dasha and your chart reading.

What your rashi tells you

Your Moon sign shows your inner world — what comforts you, how you handle stress, how you bond. It is also the reference point for Saturn and Jupiter transits, so knowing it tells you which phases of life are pressing on the mind and which are supporting it.

Make your Kundli free to see your rashi, nakshatra and Lagna together, and ask what they mean for you.

Common questions

How do I find my rashi?

Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth. Enter your date, time and place of birth here and it is calculated free with your Kundli.

Why is my Vedic rashi different from my zodiac sign?

Vedic astrology uses the Moon sign and the sidereal zodiac, while Western sun-sign astrology uses the Sun and the tropical zodiac. The two usually differ.

Is rashi by name correct?

A name-based rashi is a naming custom. Your birth rashi comes from the Moon's position at birth and is the one used for predictions.

Can I find my rashi without birth time?

Usually yes. The Moon spends about two and a quarter days in a sign, so only on days it changes sign does the time decide your rashi.
